Chik and Kent & Cinnamon Club City is the newest thing to hit Murray Street in the Perth CBD.
That’s quite a name, wouldn’t you say?
Chik and Kent refers to a small café located within, and in accordance with Cinnamon Club City, a restaurant specialising in Indian fusion style cuisine.
Chikmagalur, located in the state of Karnataka in Southern India, is said to be the place where Baba Budan introduced the first coffee plant into India by bringing seven seeds from Yemen. Kent is the name of the first English-born coffee farm owner in India, and the name of one of the first coffee cultivars introduced by Baba Budan. It’s a pretty interesting story. If you’re not already familiar with it, it’s worth the Google search.
So what exactly is Indian fusion cuisine?
Indian fusion cuisine is a contemporary approach to this already beloved style of food. It explores and introduces the forgotten flavours of Indian cuisine, presenting them in a contemporary manner. Fusion at Cinnamon Club City also means that their renowned chef fuses Indian flavours with other styles of cooking. In traditional Indian cooking, every spice has a purpose, meaning that it adds an element of wellness to the body and soul. And with exception of the raw spices, everything at Cinnamon Club City is made in-house.
With an emphasis on communal dining, the entire menu at Cinnamon Club City is designed to provide an alternative to the typical Indian dining experience and put the fun and colour back into dining.
But it’s not only about the food at Cinnamon Club City. All parts share an equal focus between the bar, restaurant and café. Cocktails, wine and beer are pre-selected to match the food in order to maintain the delicacy of flavour of the dish. The beer and wines available were chosen to stand up to, and compliment, the bold flavours of Indian cuisine. Cocktails are tropical and fresh and interestingly, all named after Placebo songs.
But what could an Indian restaurant possibly know about great specialty coffee?
So glad you asked! The coffee program at Chik and Kent was developed by a couple of specialty coffee veterans with many years of hospitality experience. The coffee bar is perched in the front of the restaurant with a large open window to easily accommodate the commuters and shoppers passing by. The Synesso eagerly pumps out various single origins as the Kalitas and cold drip wait patiently for their turn.
But that’s not even the exciting part! Batch coffee (and cocktails) on tap are still in the development stage and awaiting their turn to be exhibited in this beautiful and exotic venue.
Another cool thing, all of the food, drinks and coffee at Chick and Kent & Cinnamon Club City are seasonal, meaning that the menus will change with new moons and tides.
When asked about what exactly the brains behind Chik and Kent & Cinnamon Club City were trying to achieve with this project, they said that they weren’t trying to reinvent the wheel, but rather simply produce the best possible product; they just want to be themselves.
Function packages beyond table bookings are available, and there’s the potential for catering in the future.
