Roasters Visit Capricorn

Capricorn Visit

After years of learning the fine art of coffee roasting, Jay and Rich extended their knowledge with a practical tour of one of Australia’s largest coffee plantation’s: Capricorn Estate.

Capricorn Estate is located 30kms north of Yeppoon in Queensland and lies just along the Tropic of Capricorn. Everyone at Five Senses was gobsmacked with our first taste of Capricorn and believe it is the best coffee Australia has to offer, by far.

Prior to departure, the roasters were more excited about the opportunity of a work junket … the big steaks, the golf and the chillin without the nagging wives. But came back praising the experience and knowledge they gained of the green bean process.

Obviously the green bean process itself wasn’t new to them. They have spent years learning the culinary art of roasting, whether by reading, visual media or what has been passed on by the Five Senses roasting forefather — Dean, but the practical knowledge is what has completed the circle of knowledge from seed to cup.

At Capricorn, the Owner, CK Choo, and the Head Plantation Manager, John Lawes, took them on an extensive tour showing the intricate levels of the process. John explained things like, harvesting, washing, sorting, removal of foreign objects, removal of damaged cherries, storage and the order process.

The roasters have also suggested that a visit to the coffee plantation just outside of Las Vegas would also be beneficial to their learning experience.
