Best of the South West

The holiday season is just around the corner and our thoughts are turning to long summer days; lazing on pristine beaches, relaxing in the shade with a good book … heaven. The long, sweaty drive to your destination, however, with the kids griping, “Are we there yet?” every ten minutes, is not quite so heavenly. So a good brew to sustain you on the drive is essential. Here’s the official 5 Senses’ guide to some of the finest coffee establishments in WA’s popular ‘down south’ region.

South West cafes: Samovar, artéZEN Espresso Bar and The Urban Bean.

First stop is Samovar, a classy café situated smack-bang in the middle of Busselton. If you can plan your journey to include a stop at Samovar, you won’t be disappointed. Samovar is a family friendly venue which welcomes customers of all ages and offers something to suit all tastes and budgets. You can grab a fantastic coffee and wrap, or sit down and relax in their restaurant. Enjoy a cup of the best as you ponder what to choose from their extensive menu which features freshly prepared local produce and seafood, and includes a range of meals for the kids. Just one glance at Samovar’s menu will start your tastebuds watering in anticipation …

Continuing down the coast you reach Dunsborough, which boasts the artéZEN Espresso Bar. This stylish café has a gorgeous fit-out and its welcoming atmosphere has helped it build a dedicated following of coffee fanatics. It’s incredibly popular with locals and holiday makers for both its quality espresso and delectable meals. artéZEN was a finalist in the Catering Institute of Australia’s Gold Plate Awards for 2008 — testament to its high quality and popularity. artéZEN promotes the art of dolce far niente — “the sweetness of doing nothing”. What a perfect holiday sentiment! If you’re staying in Dunsborough, put this café on your itinerary. Even if you’re not staying in the area, it’s worth taking a detour through Dunsborough to enjoy an artéZEN breakfast or lunch with a coffee. Make sure you get in early on the weekends to secure a table, though, or you might find a takeaway coffee is all you’ll be able to get!

If your destination is Margaret River, you can’t go past The Urban Bean. The people at The Urban Bean take pride in their coffee and this café has earned a strong reputation as the best breakfast spot in town. The menu features organic and free range produce from the local area and there’s always a friendly face behind the counter, ready to serve you a top-notch coffee.

And while we know these cafés will keep you supplied with espresso, we still recommend that you pull out your trusty ‘holiday’ plunger and grind a bag of your favourite 5 Senses blend (you could try our Plunger Blend) for when you’re off the beaten track. After all, we can’t have you going into withdrawal on your holiday …
