The wait is over! Justin Kenny and Jonny Nease have opened their new joint venture, Elixir Coffee Specialists, at 145 Stirling Highway in Nedlands.

To tell you the truth, it’s all been a bit of a mystery. Over the last couple of months there have been a lot of whispers and gossip about when and where these guys were planning on re-emerging. JK and Jonny, affectionately known as ‘The Squeeze’, are well recognised for their work at Velvet Espresso in the Perth CBD. If you haven’t been there, Velvet is an absolute gem in the city. With Justin’s vision and Jonny’s attention to detail, they both became very well known for their serious coffee.

Over the years they continually tweaked and perfected their blend, style and speed – all the while maintaining extremely high standards. It’s really no surprise that at peak times they had (and continue to have) a line out the door. They have managed the impossible, getting notoriously rushed business people to slow down and smell the espresso! Obviously they are worth the wait, and it’s comforting to know that people see the value in a great coffee.

Even though they have been laying low lately, with the odd appearance here and there, JK and Jonny have been very busy behind the scenes, making sure every detail is accounted for in time for Elixir’s grand opening.

I’ve managed to catch up with them a couple of times prior to the opening for a sneak peek at their progress, and the fit looks sleek and funky. It’s got a bit of an industrial feel to it with its high ceilings, exposed beams and huge metal lamp shades. They have also gone for the awesome Tolix stools and chairs that are not only gorgeous and simplistic, but also surprisingly comfortable. Their baby blue cups are a bit of a showpiece, and have been selectively chosen for their size and coffee to milk ratio, coming all the way from Croatia.

As far as coffee goes, it will be nothing but the best from these guys. They are at the peak of the experience and know with confidence exactly what they want and how it will all work. Not to mention that they will own the very first 3 group Synesso Hydra in WA, complemented by two brand spanking new modified Roburs for their espresso and milk blends.
