CU @ Cnr.

If you’ve wandered through Northbridge recently, you may have stopped to admire the grassy piazza at the corner of Lake and James Streets. You may have even discovered the piazza’s best kept secret, Cnr. Tucked away under the huge TV screen, with tables overlooking the grassy expanse, Cnr. has been serving up outstanding coffee to lucky punters for just over two months.

Northbridge hasn’t traditionally been café territory, but the past year has seen some high quality establishments emerge. Cnr. owners, Lu and Ken, are true coffee lovers, and have kicked things off the right way, investing in a 3-group Synesso Sabre and bringing Steve Lomax on board as head barista. It’s easy to see how much Steve loves what he does as he beams down on you from way above the Synesso. His recommendation for those wanting their heart rate boosted is his ‘dark horse kicker’. As well as their house blend, they offer a rotating Single Origin for those who want to explore new beans.

Steve describes their in-house chef as “bloody grumpy! — but serious about his food”. The guys at Cnr. are passionate about using quality local produce and they turn out some inspired sandwiches and rolls (try the lamb shank sandwich!). There’s also pub-inspired food for the very hungry, and daily specials, where the chef gets to indulge his creativity. On the day we visited, the smoked salmon arancini with tomato relish sounded pretty tempting! Cnr. is in the process of obtaining a liquor licence and if you consider yourself a wine buff, Steve tells us that they’re keen to take suggestions for their wine list.

All of the tables are arranged to make the most of the gorgeous view over the piazza. The shady outside tables are just the thing for Mums (and Dads!) with kids. Where else can you relax and gossip over a coffee while the kids play on the grass? They’ll even give you free babycinos for your little ones.

The huge TV screen out the front is a massive attraction. Kick back on the grass during the day with a coffee and sanger, enjoying a doco, or bring the family along on a Saturday night during March for one of the free, family friendly movies. Cnr. even serve ‘TV dinners’ that you can enjoy with your family, while relaxing on one of the beanbags.

If you haven’t discovered Cnr. for yourself, head down and say hello to Steve, Lu and Ken.
