"Welcome to Five Senses Coffee"

Have you ever been to a mate’s house — or a family do and you notice a coffee machine sitting on their kitchen bench? Have they ever followed the gaze of your eyes and immediately responded to the visual cue with a predictable offer of a coffee from their “you beaut” coffee machine. These situations are pretty common and they normally go just one of two ways — really badly or amazingly well. Sometimes the scenario starts with the person pulling a tin of mass produced pre-ground coffee out of their pantry, it’s the big tin because it was far better value and they can get it to last at least 6 months. Whilst smiling politely you cringe and think “this is not going well”. Alternatively, they pull out a small bag of beans, glance down at the roast date, give an affirming nod and tip out a considered portion into a small bench top grinder and you think, “today is a good day.”

Coffee made badly at home can become a thing of the past. We now have something that you can use to help your mate, brother, sister, uncle or cousin never make a bad coffee ever again.

It’s been a very long time coming but now it’s completed everyone at 5 Senses has breathed a collective sigh of relief. It’s not often that we undertake a project that consumes such an unexpected amount of mental, emotional and for a couple of people, performance energy.

I’m talking about our new barista training DVD starring our very own Ben Bicknell and Jennifer Murray. The DVD training project was undertaken in an attempt to make information required to make good coffee much more accessible. Information on how to make good coffee isn’t a secret, it never has been. It hasn’t even been difficult to find – it’s just that it’s been scattered though the internet universe everywhere and ironically that’s really been the main problem. For someone interested in making good coffee getting information has been relatively easy – the hard bit has been deciphering what information is good, bad, useless or sometimes even just wrong or outdated.

In this project we’ve brought all the important “bits” together into an very easy to watch, well compiled and chapter indexed DVD. Not only does it take you by the hand and walk you through the steps required to get a great result in the cup it gives you important knowledge about other things you need to consider (outside of the actual techniques) to achieve the best possible results.

We’re really proud of this DVD. All the people involved in its creation have done an amazing job. I think that it’s the next “must have” resource for anyone who makes coffee – from those who make it at home through to those who make it professionally.
