A Little Bit of Home at Our Place on the Hill

Visiting Our Place on the Hill in Kalamunda nostalgically reminded me of being back at my grandma’s house in central Kansas. Cosy, familiar and smelling oh so good, I had the feeling that not only was I was about to savour a great cup of coffee, but I was also very close to indulging in more than my fair share of homemade baked goods.
Celebrating over a year in business, owners Steve and Toi Eccles have combined both of their strengths to build Our Place on the Hill. Steve, who has a background in management, runs the front of the house while Toi (whom he affectionately refers to as the “Chief Engineer” and “Chief Architect”) has full command of the kitchen. As Steve is originally from England and Toi from Thailand, patrons can see and feel the combination of the owners’ origins. Walls are decorated with antique worldly possessions and English magazines fill the racks.
But don’t be fooled by their innocent and relaxed appearance, Steve and Toi are serious about their coffee. The house blend is an artful combination of Indonesian and PNG flavours that are characterised by bright, fresh aromas, a big, bold taste and coupled with undertones of pleasant earthiness and lingering complexity. The body is deep and the flavours are strong and rich.
Although Kalamunda is a small, quiet community with many cafes to choose from, I noticed that the people sitting outside at Our Place on the Hill were continuously popping their heads in the door to thank Steve and express favourable remarks. There was some great Billie Holliday-esque jazz playing in the background and again I felt like I was back on grandma’s farm for the holidays. While the faces were not familiar, the friendly and wholesome atmosphere was indeed, and in many ways, a nice substitute to the real thing.
