Sea Shepherd Fueled by Five Senses

The Sea Shepherd needed some coffee and we were keen to get on board, wink wink! The famous boat has been parked in Freo for the last couple weeks finalising preparations for their 100+ day trip into Antartic waters with a mission to find and intercept the Japanese whaling boats.

Most on board are volunteers and everything has been paid for in donations by small and large supporters. The boat itself feels like a maze of rabbit warrens with basic supplies and nothing in excess, just enough to keep them going. You can’t deny the energy on board. I’m sure everyone has different motivations for being a part of this experience, but most of all I think they are all focused on one common goal – protecting the whales.

It is with pleasure that we can play a very small role in their bigger picture and we happily got on board to helped them set up a cute little coffee station. They now have two Baratza Maestros, six Clever Drippers and endless kg’s of coffee at their disposal. We completed a little impromptu training which involved dosing by sight and an internal “I think that’s about ready” timer…and voilà! A delicious cup of coffee. It’s amazing the difference a few small and inexpensive bits of equipment can make.

I think the details and nuance in the cup may get a little skewed in the swell, but it’s safe to say this crew will be enjoying a hearty cup. Although it’s all in context, aboard this ship in the great wide and beyond, these sailors will no doubt be enjoying the best dang coffee they have ever tasted! Go Sea Shepherd!
