Dropping In to Third Wave Cafe

Port Melbourne is one of those strange Melbourne suburbs which café owners seem to have over looked for many years when hunting for that perfect location to produce amazing coffee. However it now seems to be growing into one of Melbourne’s hotspots for your daily caffeine hit.

The latest addition to the Port Melbourne café frenzy is Third Wave Café, located just one street back from the beautiful esplanade of Port Melbourne, where you’re bound to run into an AFL team or two pounding the pavement along the water.

Husband and wife team, Greg and Inga, decided that a former fish and chip shop was the perfect Port Melbourne location to open their ideal café. Some massive renovations were on the cards to turn the aqua and blue fish shop into the warm, relaxing café atmosphere that you see in the pictures below. To complete their dream, they needed the dream espresso machine, so they decided the Synesso Cyncra was the only way to go. The house blend is complemented by a range of single origin coffees that change constantly.

Greg and Inga, originally from Russia, want to share some of their Russian heritage with the Port Melbourne locals. So they have recently added a selection of traditional Russian lunch options to their menu, including pelmeni, a dumpling made with your choice of mushroom, meat or potato. The best way to taste the new Russian offerings though is to order the hearty Russian sample plate. If you’re not feeling up to the exotic flavours of Mother Russia, there is a wide selection of meals available from the kitchen, or if you’re in a rush (like most people these days) the selection of Panini, made on a traditional Italian Panini press, are to die for.

Next time you’re pounding the pavement along the Port Melbourne foreshore, take a detour to Third Wave Café and rest, relax and recharge for that hard slog home.
