Next Stop, 30 Mill

There are some cafes you visit that just make you want to stay there all day, reading a book, soaking up the winter sun and, of course, drinking great coffee. If this sounds like somewhere you need to be, then head over to 30 Mill Café in Malvern.
As its name suggests, 30 Mill (after the accepted 30 millilitre volume of an espresso) is a coffee-focused venue with an exciting coffee programme on offer. James Laskie, owner and operator, has created a warm, inviting space. You can pop your head through the window for some take away coffees or relax inside and watch the trains rushing by in the distance, while savouring your leisure. For years James had been managing cafés in Melbourne until he decided to take the leap into running his own business.
Embarking on a father-son building project, James and his dad hand-built 30 Mill with recycled woods and materials. At the centre of the café is a huge communal table that is James’ most prized custom-build. 30 Mill is unique in its location, being on a residential strip, but perched right next to a busy train line into the city. It could have been a tricky spot, but seven months in, business is booming.
Packed into this small space is a three group Cyncra Synesso, three grinders and an array of blackboards that list the coffees on offer. James’ barista skills are up there with the best and he regularly features cup of excellence coffees as a showcase for espresso. The Crompton Road blend is on offer, with plenty of body and sweet chocolate notes in milk coffees, a perfect blend for an early morning take away coffee on the way to the train. James also tweaks the grinder and Cyncra settings for each new single origin he uses, ensuring you sip on the finest flavours that Five Senses has to offer.
Towards the back of the café is a small glassed-in kitchen where chefs work hard preparing fresh sandwiches, pastries and breakfast yummies. James and the team are now ready to expand their menu as there is a steady trade of business throughout the day, largely coming from within the local Malvern community.
30 Mill is a destination venue and you don’t need to be taking a train anywhere to enjoy it. It is certainly worth the drive if you live outside of Malvern, and you won’t be disappointed with the great coffee, food and service on offer. James is already looking into the future for a new venue. He could be coming to a train station near you – and you’ll be glad he did.
