Smart Initiatives

Café Smart, the brainchild of StreetSmart Australia, has helped raise nearly $50,000 towards projects to get the homeless into work. Five Senses was proud to sponsor this event by donating discounted coffee to some of the cafes involved.

On the 5th August this year, Café Smart asked coffee makers and coffee drinkers to come together to help raise funds for small grassroots services helping people who are homeless. Cafes donated $1 to StreetSmart for every coffee they sold on the day. As the CaféSmart campaign noted, “Grab a coffee and help the homeless” is something we can all do.’ And people did.

Taking place during National Homeless Persons’ Week, 1-7 August 2011, the project brought together café owners, staff and their customers, to raise funds for this worthwhile cause. StreetSmart also teamed up with coffee roasters around Australia who supported cafes by supplying discounted coffee beans on the day. Five Senses was proud to participate. 175 cafes took part; next year they hope for many more. For more information on the project, take a look at www.streetsmartaustralia.org.

Five Senses and its family of cafes helped raise a good wad of cash to help this great cause. We subsidized some of the cafes involved in the project – and hopefully we can make it even bigger next year. We’ll keep you posted!
