A Bit of History with St. Kilda Grocery Bar

On what could be described as Melbourne’s best known strip – Fitzroy Street in St. Kilda – lies one of Five Senses’ most loyal cafes in Victoria, Grocery Bar. A premier seaside resort at the beginning of the 20th century which then became known for crime, prostitution and drugs during the Depression, and later a bohemian mecca for artists and writers, there is always something to see on Fitzroy Street – live entertainment, the hip passing parade, clubs, bars and cafes. Grocery Bar is situated in the heart of this area, and serves a sweet Five Senses’ brew to tourists and locals alike.

Around four years ago, when Five Senses started out in Victoria, Grocery Bar owner John Leever was one our first clients. His business has grown. Today he seats as many customers outside as in, but the café retains its charm, relaxed vibe and friendly welcome. John is rightfully proud of this achievement and aims to develop Grocery Bar’s reputation as the place to soak up the delights of Fitzroy Street. If you’re lucky, you might even catch John playing in his band Muddy Waters. He sings, he plays rock and he serves Five Senses’ coffee. A true Renaissance man!

The menu is packed with fresh produce and specialises in healthy food such as great salads, wraps and pides featuring ‘Kapai Puku,’ the seed of life. During the winter, Grocery Bar is justifiably famous for its hearty soups.

On the coffee front, you’ll find a 3 group Synesso Sabre serving out a custom blend coffee. It’s a perfect one for St. Kilda – made up of Indian, Honduran and Brazilian specialty coffees. The milk coffees are rich, sweet with subtle milk chocolate and cocoa tones. If you opt for the house espresso, expect a silky bodied, sweet and balanced shot with hints of melon and spice. Not quite what you’re after? Then try one of the single origins on offer.

It’s just starting to warm up in Melbourne; spring is in the air! So when you decide to hit the bay for a swim (if you dare) and go for a stroll down Fitzroy Street, why not drop into the Grocery Bar? John has plenty of hilarious stories to share about the St. Kilda scene. Bring on summer! With a coffee, of course.
