Laurence Greenfield, owner of The Daily Espresso Bar in Swanbourne, wants to do more than get people to visit his café, he wants to get them involved in the journey of coffee — in every aspect from the story of the grower to the quality in the cup.

Laurence’s first café job was over 13 years ago in Auckland. Since then he has spent time managing restaurants and opening cafes for others. Now armed with plenty of experience and a good understanding of how the café business works, he and his business partner, Charlie Galbally, are in it for themselves. And Charlie’s not new to coffee either. He owned his own café in Melbourne before moving to Perth, and his expertise ranges from bars and cafes, to being a bit of a wine wiz as well.

The Daily is located in a revamped newsagency that did business in the same spot for over 40 years. That bit of history, combined with a daily fix, not to mention being open daily, is how the café got its name. It is a relaxed, warm and inviting atmosphere where you can pick up a muffin which has been made in-house or a sandwich, and enjoy either indoor or outdoor seating.

As mentioned above however, The Daily plans to focus on the coffee. The house blend is stunning through milk. It is heavy bodied with hints of cherry and orange, as well as floral notes and hints of dark chocolate. A single origin is also available daily – they are currently showcasing a Guatemalan. With its syrupy mouthfeel and beautifully integrated citrus acidity, it is a sure winner as a long black. Because The Daily is a coffee-focused café which concentrates on educating the consumer, Laurence and Charlie like to try and engage customers in dialogue about the story of the brown liquid in the cup.

In addition, The Daily is one of the few places in Perth to utilise their New Generation Synesso Hydra to implement pressure profiling. The result is nothing short of magical. Be on the lookout for both cold drip and some filter options in the future.
