Health.i.er at CNR

Martine Trinder is doing a lot to make CNR a healthier place to visit. Since she and her husband Paul purchased the café in August of last year, CNR, situated in the heart of Northbridge, has undergone many changes in practically every facet of the business.

The first thing you’ll notice as you walk in the door is a very cosy atmosphere. Martine believes that people often come to a café looking for more than just food and coffee. So she created a space where she hopes that people can find not only a friendly interaction with staff, but also a bit of comfort and peace.

Next is the food. When deciding to centre CNR’s menu around healthier options, and even a sprinkling of raw foods, Martine recognizes that it is difficult to eat healthily all of the time, but if you can commit each day to eating ‘health.i.er’, then your body and mind will thank you.

As Martine is beginning to explore more with raw foods, she recently held her first Raw Dinner Party at the café. Tickets sold out before the event which included six courses of raw deliciousness. For more information on future dinner parties and upcoming workshops, visit CNR’s Meetup group page. Post-party comments are quite favourable!

We’re not the only ones onto CNR’s culinary explorations. The City of Perth’s ‘Eat Drink Perth’ food and wine month dedicates the entire month of March to food, and representatives were in the café last week to get their hands on Martine’s recipe for the Vege Stack and Polenta Cakes. Of course we tried it. And yes, it was amazing in all of its grilled vegetable and goat cheese goodness. Keep it in mind for your next large get-together – CNR also caters for executive lunches and external events.

While the summer months don’t exactly send everyone searching for hot coffee, CNR is brewing a refreshing cold drip to wet your whistle and keep you cool as temperatures rise. For the traditionalists, the CNR blend is sweet and earthy with a medium body and a bright acidity. A single origin is always available as well.

Future plans for CNR include not only a liquor license, but also a dj and jazz guitarist at the weekends. Martine has big plans for ‘beers & boards’ to share with friends, as well ‘health.i.er’ cocktails comprised of kombucha, an effervescent beverage made of cultures formed by fermented tea and consumed for its many health benefits, and name sake, which is only pasteurised once.

Another cool thing about CNR is that everyone who works there is very close knit – they are either related to Martine and Paul, or really good friends of the family. When asked how she managed to get her children to work for her, Martine said that they volunteered. She says that CNR, as well as the Trinder family, is community-focused. They have both joined in with the City of Perth’s mission to promote family in Northbridge. She feels that mission to promote family, as well as ‘health.i.er’ food and quality coffee, is an idea worth spreading.
