Following the winding coastal road heading north from Newcastle, NSW, most people find the stresses and tensions of the city rat race dropping away from them. These trips, often the prelude to a much-needed holiday, hold only one fear — roadhouse coffee. I know. It sends shivers up my spine too, but fear not — a haven for coffee lovers has recently emerged. Perched on the NSW coast at Forster is the new Tartt Cafe.

  • Jamming with the chefs at the Food and Wine Festival

There’s definitely something about food, wine and coffee … Many of us start off in this industry by seeing it as a means to an end, just to pay the bills. Over time though, we slowly but surely become enmeshed in the tantalising combination of craftsmanship and technique, social interaction and the opportunity to create something that another person will experience in a unique and very personal way.

  • An Origin Close-up: Fazenda Villa Boa

After working in the coffee industry for a few years, the question I am most commonly asked is, “What country has the best coffee in the world?” This question is, unfortunately, so vague that it is actually impossible to answer, and even if I do give my opinion, it will be laced with ‘ifs and buts’ like these — “It depends on my mood” or “Is the only requirement espresso?” To be perfectly honest, most people regret asking me in the first place and can’t wait to go on their merry way.

  • Joy at The Wine Store

I had a very nice time out with my husband last week. One could call it a date. We ate, drank, played Jenga and enjoyed each other’s company at a gorgeous new spot in Fremantle called The Wine Store. The Wine Store, previously The Wine Liaison, aims to introduce people to a different way of experiencing wine and expose them to something new in a casual atmosphere. The concept was the result of collaboration by majority shareholders John Poynton and Rob Bates-Smith. Rob is the director and often on the premises. Their idea was to restructure the image of The Wine Liaison, transforming it from a high-end gift shop to an eclectic store and casual bar.

  • Pressing Victory

I spent last night standing in an extremely crowded room clutching an Aeropress, wondering how many more people could possibly fit in to the already jam-packed Seven Seeds. The crowd had gathered to watch a total of 18 competitors compete for the top spot in the first Victorian Aeropress Championships.

  • 8 Days — what’s in a name?

‘Sensational coffee,’ ‘great food’ and ‘well worth travelling for’ are just some of the accolades that have been heaped upon new Melbourne café 8 Days. Situated in the heart of the affluent eastern suburb of Armadale, this outfit is polished, smart and relaxing, framing a huge communal table inside and offering outside tables just off the busy High St shopping strip, giving customers a peaceful space under the trees to enjoy their coffee.

I was invited to Singapore’s iconic 40 Hands for their coffee beer launch. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I did know that if it was a 40 Hands initiative, it was going to be good!
