Caleb crowned Victorian Barista Champion
Caleb Podhaczky put in a polished performance to take out the title of Victorian Barista Championship. His win came as no surprise to the Five Senses team, who have long recognised Caleb’s talent. Caleb is Five Senses’ point man for roasting in Victoria. Runner up was Kris Wood, with Talor Browne taking out bronze.

The iPhone has become a bit of a status symbol and it seems the 5 Senses crew aren’t immune to its appeal. There have been more than a couple of attempts to convince Jason, our finance manager, of our dire and pressing need to upgrade our mobile phones to the iPhone.

Countdown to the barista champs
The crowd went silent and the music faded. “Welcome judges, my name is Jonny, and I’ll be your barista today.” So began the competitive barista as he started his heat. The annual Barista Championships, held around Australia and the world, have become a vehicle for the continuing drive to position coffee in the culinary sphere rather than as just another offering in the caffeinated-drink market. For many, they also represent the perfect venue for sharing ideas, techniques and inspiration with others in the specialty coffee industry. In this month’s article, I want to focus on both what happens during the competition, and the social implications of the results.

While playing under the banner of the Mt Hawthorn Baptist Church, both the Five Senses men’s and women’s teams made their recent grand finals with the men’s team winning and the women’s team unfortunately falling short of the prize.
