Rwanda is small East African country that borders Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi and Congo. Many Rwandans live in rural areas and rely heavily on coffee and tea as their main source of income. The majority of farmers here are small holders that have organised co-operatives to help form a united front and meet supply and quality levels required to export to the international market.

The Cup Of Excellence (COE) program has played an integral role in recognising and encouraging the quality and unique flavor attributes that Rwanda is capable producing. This most recent auction from which Ingoboka placed 20th raised over half a million dollars in earnings that goes straight back to the farmers and cooperatives. These coffees go through weeks of intensive cupping and judging, first from national juries and finally international coffee buyers like us. All the top lots must score 85 pts and above and are all worthy of recognition for making it to the end of what started with hundreds of the best coffees in Rwanda.

Having taken part in the Rwanda COE as an international judge on behalf of Five Senses, we understand firsthand the impact this competition has on Rwanda as a country and support it wholeheartedly.
