I am a breakfast pro, like virtually everybody else I know. I have been in cafes, coffee and general hospitality all of my working life (let’s not count in years!) and I’ve also started pretty much every single day of my life with breakfast. That means I feel fairly well qualified to write about what is sometimes known as ‘The Most Important Meal of The Day’.
So, when I say Bites By D know their breakfast and deliver with flourish, you can be confident that they really do!
Full bodied and complex, the coffee at Bites By D is expertly prepared from their silver 3 group Synesso Sabre. The three year old café has wisely chosen the Dark Horse blend, and the character-driven coffee is perfectly paired with either their scrumptious Brioche French toast with caramelised banana, mascarpone and candied maple bacon or the slow cooked beans, a traditional Macedonian bean casserole dish with pesto, herbed yoghurt, poached eggs and buttery toast that’s about as comforting and delicious as it sounds, (which, to be clear, is very comforting and delicious indeed!)
You would think a café widely known for their spectacular high teas and desserts would nail their sweet breakfast – and you would be right. But dismiss the rest of the menu too fast at your peril. Bites By D strive to provide a breakfast that is both fulfilling and flavoursome, but one which still hits the target of ‘breakfast’. Owner Diana Beeck feels that the meal is sometimes over complicated and just needs fresh, locally sourced ingredients which are well prepared, cooked to perfection and then beautifully plated. This means that fluffy buttermilk pancakes and mushrooms over whipped ricotta and feta are treated equally when it comes to both quality and presentation on the plate.
If you still have room for something else after scraping every morsel of breakfast deliciousness onto your fork, then a visit to the cake cabinet is an absolute must. The stunning array of desserts are seriously tempting; whilst I only ate one, I certainly devoured the rest of them with my eyes. If you are too bedazzled to make a choice, I hope you trust my humble opinion that the Toffee Crunch Éclair will deliver 100% satisfaction. Although I definitely needed another perfect coffee featuring notes of dark chocolate coated citrus with a syrupy body to help ‘wash it down’. Try it and see!
