This is my first trip to Brazil and, while reading up on all the previous trips Jacob and others have done over the years proved very useful in preparation, nothing prepares you for what you encounter in terms of the scale of Brazil’s coffee production.

Brazil is the coffee economic powerhouse of the world.

They tend to lack the high altitudes of many other growing regions around the world but what they lack in altitude they more than make up for with their amazingly efficient operations, organised production lines and education around agronomy and processing. I was blown away by the scale of production, the volumes they can produce and some of the stunning qualities I was fortunate to cup through. As a producing country, they squeeze every last drop out of their crops and operations. I got the impression that Brazil epitomises sustainability through incredible efficiency and as a result I feel many producers could learn a lot from how Brazil (generally) goes about specialty production.

The season was done and dusted while I was visiting with not a lot of harvesting or processing happening but this proves to be the best time to taste through the past seasons qualities to build future cupping profiles. Both operations; Alice Estate and Santo Antonio have had a great year for quality and productivity so expect these two beautiful Brazils to do what they do in our line up and power on!
