Everyone loves a treat. The lucky locals in the sleepy back streets of Malvern have certainly been onto something good since Millstone opened in 2014. Prior to this, an inspired owner/head Chef, Alice Wright, had travelled to Paris in order to complete a diploma of patisserie from the highly regarded Le Cordon Bleu. That, combined with a stint at the world famous Dalloyau patisserie, was all the ammunition needed to head back to Melbourne again, open up her own space, and bring back a little piece of Paris.

Tucked away on the quiet residential strip of Claremont Ave, Millstone is a pop of colour and life. Big bright yellow awnings, sunshine and stools adorn the outside. The delicious smell of baked goods accompanies the sound of wait staff greeting customers with a cheery ‘Bonjour’ from the inside, welcoming locals and passers-by to sample its wares. A quick peek inside reveals an airy, bright space featuring gorgeous bold prints and a cake display for die for. Ok I am in. But first – coffee.

The coffee window is where I immediately stop; peering back at me is a purring polished Synesso MVP Hydra. I know I am in safe hands here. Team Millstone pour out a deliciously balanced Dark Horse house blend – there’s also a single origin option (currently the Ethiopian YirgZero) for those wanting a black alternative. The barista is on full display here and like everything inside, the presentation is clean and flawless.

Breakfast and lunch fare are of equal importance too. There is an impressive display of fresh salads which are prepared daily. The always delicious menu of classics-with-a-twist features favourites such as Jamon & Leek Croquettas or house made waffles with strawberry curd and raspberry powder. Waistline, forgive me!

Quality ingredients and freshness are key to the Millstone philosophy. Everything is baked fresh on site. Pastry chefs can be seen in action from the café floor adding to the hive of activity inside. Cakes or other seasonal goodies can often be seen cooling on a shelf nearby, almost begging you to come take one. Croissant aficionados will nod approvingly at the subtle perfect textual combination of air and flakiness. Don’t forget to take something back to the office or for your loved ones – there are huge bonus points to be earned here.

Alice also made a spectacular guest appearance on Master Chef recently, so get down early on the weekends to make sure you don’t miss out.
