Simply A Maze'n Margaret River

In 1993, Russell and Cathy McNight decided to plant a hedge maze. So, as budding entrepreneurs, they got a stack of books and set off on a mission to transform their dream into reality. Now, fast forward 18 years to A Maze’n Margaret River. While owning and operating one of the fastest-growing tourist attractions in Margaret River, WA, may seem like an unlikely transition from their original backgrounds in sign writing and administration, Russell and Cathy have successfully created a friendly and accommodating park and cafe where they are eager to provide a darn good coffee and a darn good time.

If you’re thinking that planting a hedge maze sounds like a huge undertaking, you’re right. A Maze’n Margaret River is one of only a handful of hedge mazes in the entire country – for good reason. Not only did this project actually take 24 years to cultivate, but the maintenance is continuous. There are two full-time gardeners on staff and a semi-yearly cosmetic pruning of the 7,500 square metres of hedge can take up to two months. New plants are brought onto the forty-acre property on a consistent basis, 90% originating from the Friends of Kings Park, and while you may be wondering how A Maze’n Margaret River can possibly stay green with Western Australia’s water restrictions, it’s worth noting that the hedges are rooted in clay and covered by gravel, therefore not requiring much water at all.

It is quite obvious that Russell and Cathy have put a lot of love into their facility. The result includes no less than four different mazes, three guest bbqs, a pond, picnic areas, nature trails, lawn games and, of course, a cafe.

The couple says that they had planned to incorporate a cafe from the start, and great coffee is only the beginning for visitors wishing to refuel. Their 5 Senses’ blend is smooth, light, balanced and fresh. And while you can’t go wrong with any of the menu items, the locals claim that A Maze’n Margaret River has the best fish n’ chips in town.

Staying with the ever-present theme of having a good time, Russell and Cathy feel that A Maze’n Margaret River is just starting to get warmed up. The facility is open all year round and already caters to group events. In addition, ideas for expansion include things such as an amphitheatre or outdoor theatre, miniature golf, educational eco-tours and backyard weddings. With so much to see, do, taste and smell, A Maze’n Margaret River is on its way to becoming a treasured icon on the map of this tourist region. After all, we find that it’s hard not to appreciate something that appeals to all the senses.
